The No. 5-seeded Illinois State Redbirds posted a 3-1 victory over the No. 4 seed Creighton Bluejays in the quarterfinal round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Tournament on Thursday night in the McLeod Center. Set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 25-15.
Sophomore Shannon McGlaughlin led the Redbirds with 14 kills in the match. Senior setter Kristin Stauter dished out 40 assists, notched 18 digs, and added three service aces. Junior Jenny Menendez had 25 digs to lead Illinois State.
Creighton senior middle blocker Laurel Sanford recorded eight total blocks and senior Karisa Almgren led the Bluejays with 13 kills.
Illinois State hit .182 in the match, while Creighton hit .128.
With the opening set tied at 23-23, the Redbirds took the final two points on a block error and a kill by LeighAnn Hranka to claim the set, 25-23. Illinois State held Creighton to an .085 hitting percentage in the first set.
Creighton bounced back in the second set, hitting .244 and using a late 8-1 run to take the set, 25-23.
The Redbirds strung together an 11-0 run early in the third set to build a 14-4 lead that they would not relinquish, winning the set, 25-16.
Illinois State jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the fourth set and held on to win, 25-15.
Illinois State (18-13, 9-9 MVC) advances to the semifinals for a matchup with top-seeded UNI. First serve between the Redbirds and Panthers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday in the McLeod Center.
