Panthers Sweep Pittsburgh in Day Two of Mortar Board Premier

WEST LAFAYETTE- Ind.- The No. 21 University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball swept the University of Pittsburgh Panthers 25-19, 25-21, 25-13, in day two of the Mortar Board Premier in West Lafayette, Indiana. Pittsburgh defeated George Washington 3-1 in day one of the Mortar Board Premier.

Amy Braun led the way with 17 kills while Megan Lehman and Krista DeGeest both tied for 10. Molly Turk recorded 42 assists and Candice Burke and Jenny Willms both finished with 11 digs.

The Panthers got out to an early lead in the first set. Two straight services aces from Burke gave UNI the early 8-2 lead. Several attack errors by Pittsburgh and a kill by DeGeest helped further their lead to 11-4. Pittsburgh then went on an 8-3 run to bring it within two at 14-12. A kill by Macy Ubben made it 15-12, but Pittsburgh answered with three straight points to make it 15-15. A kill from Shelby Kintzel, to make it 16-15, got the Panthers rolling and Pittsburgh couldn't respond. UNI finished with the 25-19 win in the set.

Pittsburgh kept up with UNI for most of the second set. After five seperate tied scores in the set, a kill from Lehman got the Panthers the 11-10 lead. Pittsburgh answered with a kill from Kate Yeazel to tie it up at 11-11. A kill by Braun helped the Panthers start an 8-3 run to build up a 19-14 lead. Pittsburgh couldn't answer this Panthers run and UNI won the second set 25-21.

UNI started off strong in the third set and never let up. Two straight kills from Braun gave the Panthers the early 6-2 lead in the set. Pittsburgh couldn't keep up with the Panthers, and UNI cruised to an easy 25-13 win in the third set to sweep Pittsburgh, 3-0, in the match.

UNI will play its final match of the Mortar Board Premier later today when they take on George Washington at 4:00 p.m.
