WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- The No.21 University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball team swept the George Washington Colonials 25-14, 25-12, 25-18, on Saturday night in West Lafayette, Indiana. This was the final match of the Mortar Board Premier for both teams. UNI went 2-1 in the tournament while George Washington finished 0-3.
Megan Lehman finished the game with 10 kills. Molly Turk had 32 assists for the Panthers, and Amy Braun recorded 7 digs.
The Panthers started out strong in the first set and never looked back the rest of the match. The set was tied at 2-2 and a kill by Braun put the Panthers up 3-2. The Colonials answered with a kill by Lauren Whyte to tie it up at 3-3. The Panthers took advantage of a service error by George Washington and took the 4-3 lead. That sparked a 9-4 run for the Panthers to make it 13-7 at a George Washington timeout. The Panthers went on to win the set 25-14.
In the second set, kills from Shelby Kintzel, Krista DeGeest and Molly Turk helped get the Panthers out to an early 10-3 lead. The Colonials could not match the Panthers and UNI dominated the rest of the set and won 25-12.
George Washington kept it close at the beginning of the third set. The teams were tied at 4-4, but a kill from Braun and Kintzel gave UNI the 6-4 lead. George Washington answered with several kills and tied the score up at 7-7. A kill by Degeest gave the Panthers the 8-7 lead, but the Colonials tied it up at 8-8 on the next play. The teams went back and forth again to tie it up at 9-9. The Panthers took off from there and it was too much for George Washington. UNI went on a 7-2 run to make it 16-11 at the next timeout. UNI kept it up and won the last set 25-18 to win the match 3-0.
The Panthers will head to Los Angeles, California, for the Luxe City Center Trojan Invite next weekend. They will play Boston College on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
