LOS ANGELES, Calif.- The University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball team won their first match of the Luxe City Center Trojan Invitational by defeating the Boston College Eagles 3-1 on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles, California.
Shelby Kintzel led the Panthers with 15 kills and Megan Lehman followed with 12 kills. Molly Turk recorded 39 assists and Amy Braun led with 19 digs. Krista DeGeest recorded a .357 hitting percentage for UNI.
In the first set, the Panthers jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. A Boston College kill brought the score to 7-4, but two straight kills from DeGeest put UNI up by five to make it 9-5. The Eagles answered with several service aces to bring the score to 11-10. UNI went on a 4-0 run to make it 15-10 and the Panthers cruised from there, winning the set 25-17.
The second set went a little different for the Panthers. After five separate tied scores in the match, the teams were tied at 7-7. Kills by Braun and Shelby Kintzel helped the Panthers take the lead at 10-7. UNI continued this run and expanded their lead to 17-11. The Eagles fought back and took advantage of several service errors by the Panthers to tie up the score at 20-20. UNI could not recover from this Boston College run and were defeated 22-25 in the set.
The third set started out similar to the third set. The Panthers were down 11-15 at one point in the match. Kills from DeGeest and Braun helped UNI to go on a 6-3 run to make it 17-18 at the Boston College timeout. The Panthers kept the pace up after the time out and tied it at 21-21. A block by Macy Ubben gave the Panthers the 22-21 lead, and they finished strong from there. UNI won the set by a score of 25-22.
The Panthers dominated the fourth set. They jumped out to an early 6-2 lead and didn't look back from there. They won the fourth set by a decisive 25-7 to win the match 25-7.
The Panthers will be back on the court tonight when they take on No. 5 USC in their second match of the Luxe City Center Trojan Invite at 10:00 p.m.
