The University of Northern Iowa cross country teams will compete in the Bradley Classic at Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Ill., on Friday, Oct. 15. The women will run a 6k race starting at 4 p.m., with the men’s 8k race to follow at approximately 4:45 p.m. The course is also the site of the NCAA Midwest Regional that will be held on Nov. 14.

Last Time Out

The UNI cross country teams both notched top-10 team finishes at the 38th annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational in Chicago on Oct. 2.

The UNI men’s team took sixth place out of 41 teams. Sophomore Brett Egan led the Panthers, finishing tenth overall with an 8k time of 25:19. Aaron Vosberg finished in 21st place with a time of 25:41 and Thibault Vandenabeele took 31st, clocking in at 25:52.

The UNI women tied for seventh place in the 41-team field. Danielle Nowasell was the Panthers’ top finisher, clocking in at 18:53 for 44th place in the 5k race. Holly Tjaden was close behind, finishing in 18:54 for 46th place. Lindsey Wilkins placed 51st, clocking in at 18:57.

Regionally Recognized

The UNI men’s team jumped into the NCAA Division I Regional cross country rankings announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Oct. 4. UNI is ranked No. 12 in the Midwest region after being unranked for the first three weeks of the season.

Shaving a Minute

Sophomore Brett Egan improved his personal-best 8k time by over one minute at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational (10/2). He clocked in at 25:19 to take tenth place overall. Egan’s previous top 8k time was a 26:20 finish at the Bradley Classic as a freshman in 2009.

Defending Champ

UNI sophomore Thibault Vandenabeele captured the individual title at the Bradley Classic in 2009, finishing the 8k race in a time of 24:48. Vandenabeele will be looking to defend that title on the same course Friday afternoon.

Panthers Win

In taking the women’s team title at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational (9/24), UNI won its first meet since Oct. 11, 2008, at the Lamb-Kohawk Invitational in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Wilkins Emerges

Sophomore Lindsey Wilkins picked a good time to lead the UNI women’s team in a meet, taking 12th place as an individual and leading the charge to a team title at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational (9/24). The meet marked the first time in Wilkins’s career that she was the top Panther finisher.

Balanced Attack

The UNI men’s and women’s cross country teams have run in a combined seven races in the 2010 season and five different runners have claimed the top spot in those events. Brett Egan, Thibault Vandenabeele, Carly Olsen, Danielle Nowasell and Lindsey Wilkins have all crossed the finish line first for the Panthers. Olsen and Nowasell are juniors; Egan, Vandenabeele, and Wilkins are sophomores.

MVC Ranks

Brett Egan currently tops the group of Panthers in the Missouri Valley Conference performance lists. Egan ranks tenth in the MVC with his 8k time from Oct. 2 at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invite. Danielle Nowasell and Holly Tjaden rank 24th and 25th, respectively, on the women’s 5k list.
