DES MOINES, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa cross country teams took part in their first meet of the season in the Bulldog Classic at Ewing Park in Des Moines, Iowa where Brett Egan ran away with the men's race capturing first place overall.
UNI's Brett Egan won the men's competition with a time of 12:30. Egan finished the race 19 seconds ahead of the rest of the talented field including last year's MVC cross country champion.
Andrew Swanson finished second for the Panthers with a strong performance finishing seventh overall with a time of 12:56. Terry Nielsen, a sophomore from Cedar Falls, came in 10th overall and third for UNI at 13:01.
Zach Buchheit finished 13th overall and fourth for the Panthers with a time of 13:04. Ryan Krogmann wasn't far behind finishing 15th overall and fifth for UNI at 13:09. Calvin Kibby and Alex Hershey finished back-to-back placing 17th and 18th overall coming in
at 13:12 and 13:16, respectively. Ben Fick rounded out the Panther runners finishing with a time of 13:25.
The UNI women's team had a strong outing as well at the Bulldog Classic with Hayley Thomas and Allison Fick both running close to 20-30 seconds faster than the previous year's competition.
Thomas finished first for the Panthers and fifth overall with a time of 15:12. Fick followed closely behind in second for UNI and sixth overall with a time of 15:14.
Coming in 10th place overall and third for the Panthers was Lindsey Wilkins at 15:47. Slightly behind Wilkins was Alex Wilson coming in at 16:04 placing 14th. Freshman Callie Matthews placed 18th overall and in fifth for the Panthers with a time of 16:14.
April Davidshofer came in with a time of 16:30 and Hanna Martin finished with a time of 16:43. Haley Stevens finished the race and rounded out the competition for the Panthers with a time of 17:34.
UNI cross country will return to action Fri. Sept. 7 when they head to Minneapolis, Minn. to compete at the Oz Memorial.
