PEORIA, Illinois -- The University of Northern Iowa cross country teams competed in the Bradley Classic on Friday afternoon and had what coach Dave Paulsen would call a “Panther strong” effort.
UNI recorded 14 personal bests on the afternoon while the men took third place out of 23 teams while the women took eighth place overall with 27 teams competing.
Senior Brett Egan once again led the Panther men in the 8k course. Egan finished sixth overall with a time of 24:35. Freshman Zach Buchheit finished in a time of 25:16, good enough for 28th on the afternoon.
Sophomore Terry Nielsen, junior Calvin Kibby, and senior Ryan Krogmann finished three, four, and five with just 19 seconds between the three for UNI men with times of 25:27, 25:35, and 25:46 respectively.
On the women’s side UNI placed three runners in the top-30. Senior Scotti Schon placed 11th overall for the Panthers in a time of 21:36. Senior Allison Fick finished just behind Scotti with a time of 21:46, good enough for 21st overall. Senior Hayley Thomas snuck into the top 30 with a time of 21:54, putting her in 29th overall.
Schon's time of 21:36 placed her fourth all-time in the UNI record books for the 6k course. Fick's 21:46 and Thomas's 21:54 placed them sixth and seventh respectively in the all-time ranks at UNI.
Senior Lindsey Wilkins and sophomore Alex Wilson finished fourth and fifth for UNI with times of 22:41 and 23:02 respectively.
“This was the best meet of the year for us,” said coach Dave Paulsen. “The men and women were Panther tough from wire to wire, recording 14 personal bests.”
The Panthers will look to build off of this success as they now head to the Missouri Valley Conference championships in Normal, Illinois, on October 27.
