NORMAL, Ill. - The University of Northern Iowa cross country teams competed at the MVC Championship meet today, both finishing in fifth place as a team with senior Scotti Schon earning All-MVC honors.

The women, who also placed fifth last season, had three runners place in the top-25 with Schon, Allison Fick and Hayley Thomas leading the way.

On the women's side, Schon led the Panthers with a ninth place finish overall and a time of 17:55. After recovering from mono early in the season, Schon has shined for the Panthers the last few weeks of competition. Her time of 17:55 is almost two minutes faster than the time she posted at last year's championship race and places her in eighth all-time at UNI.

Fick came in second for the Panthers, placing 13th overall with a time of 18:05. Fick returned this season after placing 42nd overall last year and improved her time from last season by over a minute.

Finishing in 21st place overall, Thomas notched a time of 18:14. An All-MVC performer last year, Thomas improved her time at the MVC Championships by several seconds on the 5K course.

The men's team, who placed eighth last season, had four athletes finish in the top-30. Brett Egan led the way for the men's side finishing 11th overall with a time of 24:54. His time of 24:54 is over a minute faster than the time he ran at last year's championship.

Ryan Krogmann came in second for the Panthers and in 26th place overall. He finished with a time of 25:36, beating his time from last season by 1:15 and improved his finish by 17 places.

Calvin Kibby wasn't far behind in 28th place overall and in third for the Panthers with a time of 25:37. With his 25:37 performance today, Kibby notched a season best time. Rounding out the Panthers' top-30 finishers was freshman Zach Bucheit in 30th place overall with a time of 25:38.

"Both teams fought hard today," head coach Dan Steele said. "The women outperformed their seed and the men overcame quite a bit of adversity to hold on to their fifth place finish."

The Panthers will return to action when they travel to Springfield, Mo. to compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 9.
