The University of Northern Iowa athletic department has honored four Panthers as the Student-Athletes of the Month for February. Joe Colon (Wrestling - Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake), Daniel Gooris (Track & Field - Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola), Chelsea Hartman (Swimming & Diving - North Liberty, Iowa/Iowa City West) and Jamie Fisher (Softball - Conrad, Iowa/BCLUW) were selected by the UNI Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Colon is a redshirt sophomore on the Panther wrestling team, majoring in physical education.
Colon finished the 2011-12 regular season with an 11-0 record in dual action, riding a 16-match win streak. Over the span of those 16 victories, Colon toppled the nation's No. 1-ranked wrestler, climbed to a No. 5 national rating, and won by regular decision just once. The rest of his wins have been major decisions (6), technical falls (4) and pins (5).
Gooris is a senior on the Panther track & field squad, majoring in movement and exercise science: sport psychology.
Gooris is the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference champion in the heptathlon, scoring 5,679 points this past weekend to rank No. 2 in UNI history and No. 15 in the nation this year. Gooris also took second place in the pole vault at the MVC Championships and is ranked No. 25 in the nation with his lifetime-best of 17-04.50 (5.30m).
Hartman is a senior freestyle swimmer for the Panthers, majoring in leisure, youth and human services.
Hartman finished fifth in the 1650 freestyle, 11th in the 500 freestyle, and 15th in the 400 IM at the MVC Championships in February to wrap up her decorated career as a Panther. She was also named second team All-Missouri Valley Conference.
A family services major, Fisher is a pitcher on the UNI softball squad.
Fisher owns a 4-0 record and a 2.12 earned run average for the 7-3 Panthers. She has racked up 34 strikeouts in 34 innings and has given up only 30 hits. Fisher has tallied wins over Valparaiso, Green Bay, Nebraska-Omaha and Missouri State on the young season. In her first appearance of the season against Valparaiso on Feb. 10, Fisher threw a complete game shutout, posting eight strikeouts and allowing only four baserunners.
