UNI Warns of Possible Sponsorship Scam
March 13, 2008 Cedar Falls, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa Athletics Department has been notified that a company has been soliciting ad space on a poster and stating it was hired by UNI Athletics. UNI Athletics is not affiliated with this program, which claims to be part of a company called MVP.
According to Leon Costello, assistant athletics director for UNI Athletics Promotions and Marketing, a representative from MVP and/or Mississippi Valley Promotions has been contacting local businesses to sell ad space on a poster for $450, which also includes ticket packages to UNI athletic events. The man calling is using the name Michael Puckett and phone numbers (309) 644-4557 and (309) 644-4559. He asks for a credit card number to be given over the phone. "We want our current sponsors, ticket holders, Panther Scholarship Club members, and the public to know we are in no way affiliated with this company," Costello said. "If solicited, please contact UNI Police at (319) 273-2712." |
