Panther Student-Athletes Shine in Classroom
June 1, 2007 Cedar Falls, Iowa - Student-athletes at the University of Northern Iowa posted a 3.0 grade point average for the spring semester, director of athletics Rick Hartzell announced today. In addition, the 431 student-athletes competing at UNI hold a cumulative GPA of 2.99. "I am extremely proud of our student-athletes for their performance in the classroom this spring," Hartzell said. "These grades typify the excellence we expect in the classroom, in social settings and in athletic competition. I also am very proud of our coaches who do such a great job in making certain that academics are the top priority for our student-athletes. We enjoy winning games, but our credibility is directly tied to academic success. As long as I am here, that will always be the top priority at UNI." This past semester, 219 UNI student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or better, and 198 student-athletes hold cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Eleven of UNI's 18 teams recorded a spring GPA of 3.0 or better, and all of UNI's teams have a team GPA of at least 2.70. Last month, three of UNI's women's teams - volleyball, tennis and indoor track and field - received public recognition from the NCAA for their Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. Each of those squads were all honored for having posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads nationwide in their respective sports. |
