WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team advanced to the Missouri Valley Conference tournament semifinals for the fourth time in school history with a 1-0 victory over visiting Illinois State on Sunday at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
UNI (13-4-1 overall) recorded its 10th shutout of the season and took advantage of first-period goal from Kelsey Yarrow to move on to Springfield, Missouri, for the MVC semifinals on Friday. Illinois State saw its season come to a conclusion at 9-9-2 overall.
"I'm really proud of our group," UNI head coach Bruce Erickson said. "We found a way to get a result against a quality opponent. Our back five with Jami was awesome and I thought our midfield shut down a couple of the best midfielders in the MVC. We found a way to win a huge match and Yarrow had a great goal. On to the next one."
Yarrow found the back of the net, for her fourth goal of the year, after a pass from Sydney Hayden with 31:19 left on the clock in the first half.
Junior goalkeeper Jami Reichenberger earned her 10th shutout of the season tying her with Illinois State's Allison Farrington for the MVC single-season shutout record. Farrington earned 10 shutouts in the 2003 season.
UNI advances to play No. 1 seeded Drake in Springfield, Missouri, in the first MVC Tournament semifinal on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Missouri State is the No. 2 seed and will take on Loyola in the other semifinal on Friday at 6 p.m. The 2017 MVC Tournament championship match is set for Nov. 5 at 1 p.m.
The victory was UNI's first home MVC Tournament victory after having lost its previous three home tournament matches. UNI is 4-9 all-time in MVC Tournament play and will be looking to qualify for its first championship match in program history.
