SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team (14-4-1) advanced to the MVC Championship match, defeating the top-seeded Drake Bulldogs, 2-0.
The Panthers broke the stalemate first off a goal by Brynell Yount. Yount went to score and was blocked by Haley Morris of Drake. Morris's shot bounced off a Drake player and Yount took advantage of the open net, scoring in the 30th minute.
Yount struck again in the 38th minute, off an assist from Morgan Teel. Yount leads the Panthers in single-season goals with 11 and sits at 15 all-time goals. Yount is tied with teammate Sarah Brandt for no. 3 on the All-Time list.
"Our goal was to be there defensively, and we did that. Both of my shots came from great passes from my teammates. We were excited to get Drake for the first round because we wanted to see them again," remarked Yount after the game.
Junior goalkeeper Jami Reichenberger earned her 11th shutout of the season. Reichenberger breaks Illinois State's Allison Farrington for the MVC single-season shutout record. Farrington earned 10 shutouts in the 2003 season.
Reichenberger defended against 10 attempts by Drake. Drake outshot UNI 25-11
"I couldn't be more proud of the girls this season. I thought we stuck with the game plan and had one of the best performances all season," commented head coach Bruce Erickson.
Drake defeated UNI on Oct. 11, 2-1 in Des Moines.
UNI will face the winner of #3 Loyola and #2 Missouri State. The championship match will be broadcast on The Valley on ESPN3 at 1 p.m.
