ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball program was recognized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) today for its outstanding achievement in the classroom, ranking No. 8 in the WBCA Academic Top 25 Division I Team Honor Roll.
UNI achieved a team GPA of 3.609 during the 2016-17 school year to finish in the WBCA Top-25 for the sixth consecutive season. The Panthers' No. 8 rank is the 14th time in program history that the Panthers have finished inside the top-15 and the ninth time under the direction of head coach Tanya Warren. UNI has earned a top-10 finish in the WBCA honor roll in four of the last five seasons.
"We take great pride in being successful on the court and in the classroom," Warren said. "For our program to achieve this top-10 honor and be selected as an at-large participant in the NCAA Tournament is a phenomenal statement about our student-athletes' effort and dedication."
The Panthers are also the highest ranked Missouri Valley Conference team on this year's WBCA Top 25 Honor Roll, a list of teams recognized in NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA and junior college that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2016-17 season is the 22nd in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.
UNI posted its second straight 20-win season in 2016-17 - marking the first back-to-back 20-win seasons in program history. The Panthers went 24-9 and secured the program's first at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. Senior guard Madison Weekly was named the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. Under Warren's direction, the Panthers have had 23 MVC Scholar-Athlete selections, including eight first-team picks.
