UNI Dance Team and T.C. the mascot take honors at national competition

            Lake Buena Vista, Florida -- The University of Northern Iowa Dance team and Panther mascot T.C. (The Cat), each brought trophies home from the 2007 College Cheerleading and Dance Championships at Walt Disney World this past weekend (January 12-14).

The UNI dance team placed fifth in Sunday morning's finals of the Division I dance team portion of the competition at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex. A total of 20 dance teams from around the nation qualified for nationals, and 10 advanced from Saturday's semifinal round to the finals.  The fifth place finish was UNI's highest-ever finish at the nationals, after placing 10th a year ago.

"This squad is very special group of young people, they were able to achieve their goals without a coach.  This squad succeeds because they rely on each other to get things done," said UNI Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Promotions Nate Clayberg.

On Friday night, UNI's mascot, T.C., finished 10th in the national mascot at the Disney/ MGM Studios.  This was T.C.'s first trip to nationals since 2004 when he finished ninth.

            UNI dance team members include Jessica Fuller (So./ Marion, Iowa), Kim Gladson (Sr./ Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Elizabeth Hackbarth (Jr./ Marion, Iowa), Morgan Havlicek (Sr./ Mohville, Iowa), Katie Kohnert (Sr./ Newhall, Iowa), Amanda Miller (Fr./ Sioux City, Iowa), Holly Petersen (Sr./ Van Horne, Iowa), Trista Powers (So./ Jefferson, Iowa), Casey Rickels (So./ Anamosa, Iowa), Holli Rutherford (Fr./ Grinnell, Iowa), Aubrey Seltrect (Sr./ Cedar Rapids, Iowa), and Sierra VanderHelm (So./ Sioux Center, Iowa).
