ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Northern Iowa's mascot, T.C., earned a seventh-place finish Friday at the Universal Cheer Association/Universal Dance Association (UCA/UDA) National Championships.

In his fourth appearance in the national championships, T.C. improved upon his 10th-place finish from a year ago. Only the nation's top 10 mascots are invited to compete in the annual competition, held at Disney's Wide World of Sports.

Smokey of the University of Tennessee claimed the 2008 mascot championship.

T.C. (The Cat) entered this year's event having qualified in fourth place among all collegiate mascots to match his best-ever qualification mark, which he also scored in 2004.  T.C.'s trip to Orlando was made possible by a generous donation from The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

The UNI Dance Team, making its seventh appearance in the national championships since 1999, will compete Saturday against 25 other dance programs. The UNI Dance Team recorded an all-time best finish of fifth in last year's championships and will look to improve upon that performance when they take the stage at 10 a.m. Saturday.
