Spirit Squad
RESPONSIBILITIESThe following is an abbreviated version of UNI Cheerleading requirements and responsibilities for further information contact Spirit Squad Advisor Jessica Fuller at fullerj@uni.edu or e-mail UNISpiritSquad@uni.edu. Academic status: As UNI athletes, cheerleaders must maintain full-time student status and a minimum 2.0 GPA. Practices and performances: UNI Cheerleaders are required to attend all practices, games, community appearances and competitions scheduled. Number of events varies from year to year and season to season. Squad members are responsible for promoting spirit and motivating the crowds at athletic events. Practices are tentatively held on Sundays, Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the academic year. Additional practices may be added at the coach/advisor's discretion. In addition, there are three/four required practice sessions in the summer as well as games over the holiday break. Community service points: In addition to games and performances, squad members are required to attend and/or assist in at least 30 hours of community service each season in order to win an athletic letter. There are a number of community service events that will be required of the squad, in which you will be penalized if you do not attend.
Conditioning and Health: All team members must receive a physical conducted by UNI Athletic Training at the beginning and end of each season. Squad members who cannot attend the scheduled physical will be required to reschedule and/or receive an examination at his/her own expense. Injuries received during university performances and appearances will be treated by UNI athletic trainers. Conduct and Discipline: UNI Cheerleaders are representing the university, athletic department and state at all times and may be recognized in and out of uniform. Squad members are expected to conduct themselves accordingly and are held to a higher standard than the general student populace. Cheerleaders should maintain a positive and respectful attitude toward peers, professors, fellow athletes and other university staff members. All rules, regulations and other matters of disciplinary action are discussed in the UNI Cheerleading Rules and Regulations. The spirit squad advisor will handle all attendance and disciplinary matters directly. For more information on rules and regulations or to view a copy e-mail uni-cheer@uni.edu. Fund-raising and expenses: UNI Cheerleading is a partially funded program therefore squad members are required to fund-raise and in addition may incur out-of-pocket expenses. Items to be fund-raise for and/or possible expenses may include camp deposit, uniforms, practice clothes, bags, shoes and poms. Team fund-raisers include the Panther Spirit Club, annual UNI Spirit Squad Poster, working concessions, and various other events. Summer Camp: Camp is mandatory for all cheerleaders including a two to three-day practice session prior. Those not attending will not letter for the season. UNI Cheerleaders usually attend camp in Milwaukee, August 1-4. While in attendance, squad members will learn and compete with a fight song routine and side line.
