Responsibilities

The following is an abbreviated version of UNI Dance Team requirements and responsibilities for further information contact uni-dance@uni.edu.

  • Academic status

    As UNI athletes, dance team members must maintain full-time student status and a minimum 2.0 GPA.

  • Practices and performances

    Members of the UNI Dance Team are required to attend all practices, games, community appearances and competitions scheduled. Number of events varies from year to year and season to season.

    In addition to half time and timeout performances, dance team members are responsible for promoting spirit and motivating the crowds at athletic events.

    Practices are held Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursdays throughout each academic week. Additional practices may be added at the coach's discretion. In addition, there are three/four required practice sessions in the summer as well as practices and performances over the holiday break.

  • Community service points

    In addition to games and performances, dance team members are required to attend and/or assist in at least five community service events each season in order to earn an athletic letter. After each event is completed, team members must submit a written report stating the name of the event, the date, the time and what they learned while participating.

  • Conditioning and Health

    Working out in addition to practice is necessary in order for team members to remain in excellent physical condition and to prevent injury. Every squad member is expected to work out at least three times a week in addition to scheduled practice and performances. This includes stretching and flexibility exercises.

    All team members must receive a physical conducted by UNI Athletic Training at the beginning and end of each season. Team members who cannot attend the scheduled physical will be required to reschedule and/or receive an examination at his/her own expense.

    Injuries received during university performances and appearances will be treated by UNI athletic trainers.

  • Conduct and Discipline

    UNI Dance Team members are representing the university, athletic department and state at all times and may be recognized in and out of uniform. Team members are expected to conduct themselves accordingly and are held to a higher standard than the general student populace. Dance team members should maintain a positive and respectful attitude toward peers, professors, fellow athletes and other university staff members.

    As a representative of the dance team, members should maintain a neat and well-groomed appearance. Hair should be pulled away from the face while in uniform, and the only jewelry to be worn are small earrings.

    All rules, regulations and other matters of disciplinary action are discussed in the UNI Dance Team Rules and Regulations. The dance team coach and/or spirit squad advisor will handle all attendance and disciplinary matters directly.   • Fund-raising and expenses

    The UNI Dance Team is a partially funded program therefore team members are required to fund-raise and in addition may incur out-of-pocket expenses.

    Items to be fund-raise for and/or possible expenses may include camp deposit, travel and hotel fees, airfare, meal expenses, costumes and uniforms, practice clothes, bags, shoes, make-up and hair accessories.

    Team fund-raisers include the annual UNI Spirit Squad Poster; the 200 Club, the UNI Dance Team's booster club; summer carwash; can and penny drives; a kids dance clinic; candy sales; t-shirt sales and various other events.

  • Competition

    The UNI Dance Team strives to qualify for and compete in the UDA National College Dance Championship in Orlando. The competition is usually held in early January requiring team members to meet several times over the holiday break for practices.

    Should the UNI Dance Team qualify and receive partial funding for a large scale or national competition, team members are required to participate. If the team does not qualify for semifinal rounds, the team will then vote on whether or not to attend said competition.

  • Summer Camp

    Camp is mandatory for all teams members to attend including a two to three-day practice session prior to. Those not attending will not letter for the season.

    The UNI Dance Team usually attends camp in Milwaukee the first week in August. While in attendance, team members will compete with a home routine as well as learn and compete with a fight song routine. In addition, team members will learn several individual routines to be evaluated on.
