Panthers Win 10 Events At Wisconsin Elite Invitational

Jansen improved upon her provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a season-best throw of 63 feet, 8 1/4 inches in the women's weight throw and also claimed the title in the women's shot put by throwing 53-1 3/4. The Panthers' Sarah Harms took third in the weight throw and fifth in the shot behind Jansen, while senior Crystal Hanson earned another field event win for UNI with a winning leap of 5-6 in the women's high jump.
In the 3,000 meters, UNI senior Traci Hawley claimed the win by clocking in at 10:10.85. Senior Meredith Simon backed up a sixth-place showing in the women's 60-meter dash with a second-place effort in the 200 meters, while fellow senior Lauren Carruthers took second in the 400 meters with a time of 58.20, just behind the winning time of 58.13 turned in by former Panther standout Nikki Pauli. Seniors Amy Bagge and Jamie Hutchinson each scored top-five finishes in the women's 800 meters, while junior Caedryn Schrunk was fourth in the women's mile. The Panthers put up another strong showing in the 4x400 relay, as UNI's top squad of freshman Ellen Kindelsperger, Hutchinson, Bagge and Carruthers won in 3:52.98 over the "A" teams of In the men's 4x400, the Panthers turned to the squad that owns the school's outdoor record in the event, with the quartet of Cory Goos, Ryan Grenko, Tyler Mulder and Terrance Reid nipping Wisconsin by one one-hundredth of a second for the win in 3:16.66. Reid added another win in the men's 400, taking the top spot in 48.56 seconds, ahead of Grenko, who was third, and Goos, who took fourth. The Panthers made the men's 800 meters their playground, with UNI athletes sweeping to top four spots. Mulder claimed the win in 1:52.44, two seconds ahead of freshman Beau Dielschneider, who was competing unattached. Tim Fulton was third in 1:55-flat, with Nick Sorbe taking fourth. Sophomore Dorian Ulrey took the men's mile against a strong field, winning by better than two seconds with a clocking of 4:11.89, while senior Raven Cepeda finished second in the 60 hurdles. In the field, sophomore Ehi Oamen improved upon his Missouri Valley Conference-leading mark in the men's high jump, clearing 6-10 1/4 to win the event over Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Quinn Mongoven and Lucas Cook added another win for the Panthers in the men's weight throw, throwing 57-0 1/4. The Panthers continue the indoor season next weekend with their second home meet of the year, the two-day UNI Invitational that begins Friday (Feb. 1) with multi-event competitions in the UNI-Dome. |
