Panthers Compete in UNI-Dome Open, Final Regular Season Meet
Feb. 17, 2006 Cedar Falls - The University of Northern Iowa track and field teams hosted the UNI-Dome Open today in their final tune-ups before they compete in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships next weekend. In men's action in the field events, freshman Mat Clark (Ames, Iowa/Ames) earned the runner-up spot in the high jump, reaching 6-4 ¾, his season-high in the event. Sophomore Raven Cepeda placed third in the pole vault, clearing 15-7, and he also ran an 8.31 in the 60 hurdles to earn fifth place. In the 60 meters, senior Patrick Hunter (Racine, Wis./Washington Park) broke the tape with his first-place time of 6.83. Close behind was senior teammate Samuel Dodoo (Accra, Ghana), placing third in 6.91. In the mile, sophomore Chris Lawson (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) clocked in at 4:25.17 for a third-place finish and season-best time. Running the 600 was junior Chris Cooper (Dayton, Iowa/Southeast Webster), finishing fifth in 1:22.95 and freshman Tim Fulton (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah), placing sixth in 1:23.10. Junior Mark Harris (Toronto, Canada/Birchmount Park) ran a 22.62 time in the 200 meters to place third out of 58 athletes. Dodoo also placed sixth in that event, clocking in at 22.78. Sophomore Mike Clancy (Iowa City, Iowa/West) was the top performer for the Panthers in the 3000, finishing sixth with his 8:47.88 time. In field events for the women, senior Ivana Barsic (Zabresic, Croatia/16th) placed first with a 58-3 mark, while junior Morgen Edwards (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) took the runner-up spot with a throw of 55-5. Sophomore Crystal Hanson (Roland, Iowa Roland-Story) earned second place in the high jump with a 5-7 ¼ mark. In the shot put, sophomore Rachel Jansen (Orange City, Iowa/MOC-Floyd Valley) earned another provisionally-qualifying mark with a throw of 50-6 ¼ and a first-place finish. Second place went to Edwards, who threw for 45-8.
On the track for the women, junior Kara Yahn (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) ran a time of 8.97 in the 60 hurdles to earn second place, while sophomore Cali Lyons (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) placed third in 9.03. UNI took third, fourth, fifth and sixth place in the 60 dash, as sophomore Blair Runde (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) clocked in at 7.87, sophomore Stacy Butt (DeWitt, Iowa/Northeast Goose Lake) finished in 8.05, junior Sarah Lynch (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge/Iowa Central CC) finished in 8.10 and freshman Lindsay Wiebers (Denison, Denison-Schleswig) finished in 8.11. Freshmen Moa Westman (Norrtalje, Sweden/Sollentuna) and Caedryn Schrunk (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake) provided the one-two punch in the mile, finishing first and second with times of 5:04.59 and 5:06.88. In the 800, junior Jamie Hutchinson (Charles City, Iowa/Iowa City West) was the first-place finisher with her 2:14.25 time. Freshman Whitney Johnson (Adel, Iowa/ADM) clocked in at 2:18.21 for third place. In 200-meter action, Lynch was the runner-up with a 26.22 time and Wiebers placed fourth in 26.43. The women's relay team `A' also placed first in its competition, clocking in at 3:53.87. Next weekend, UNI hosts the MVC Championships in the UNI-Dome beginning Friday (Feb. 24) and concluding Saturday (Feb. 25).
