Ulrey Posts Second NCAA Qualifying Mark

Ulrey's effort highlighted the Panthers' final tuneup for the indoor championship season, which begins next weekend with the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships in the UNI-Dome. The sophomore, running his first 800 of the season, clocked in at 1:50.77 to earn a provisional spot in next months NCAA Indoor Championships. Ulrey also has qualified for the national meet in the mile run after posting a school-record run of 4:01.66 two weeks ago.
Also for the Panthers, senior Terrance Reid posted the team's top 60-meter dash time of the season, clocking in at 7.06 seconds. Reid also took runner-up honors in the 200 meters with a 21.86-second effort that improved upon his own team-best effort for the year. In the mile, senior Andy Schon posted a personal-best of 4:22.52 to claim the event by nearly four seconds, while senior Jarrel Anderson clocked in at 8.01 to win the 60-meter hurdles. The sophomore tandem of Ehi Oamen and Julian Morris put together another 1-2 finish in the men's high jump, part of a sweep of the top three positions by the Panthers. Oamen and Morris each cleared 6 feet, 9 3/4 inches, while teammate Luke Thompson was third with a mark of 6-7 1/2. A trio of Panthers also tied for second in the men's pole vault, with Raven Cepeda, Mike Beese and Phil Hanson each clearing 16-6 3/4. WOMEN'S COMPETITION The Panthers took two of the top three spots in the women's 4x400 relay, with the UNI effort of Lauren Carruthers, Megan Iverson, Amy Bagge and Holli Hosch taking the win in 3:50.52 - the only quartet to clock in below four minutes. UNI's other squad, comprised of Regina Reinig, Ellen Kindelsperger, Caedryn Schrunk and Amanda Huling, took third in 4:05.11. The Panthers swept the top three spots in the women's 60-meter dash, with Blair Runde taking the event in a season-best 7.76 seconds. Meredith Simon followed in 7.79, with Lindsay Wiebers taking third in 8.11. Simon led a sweep of the top two spots in the 200 meters, as well, taking the win in 25.59, just ahead of teammate Carruthers, who clocked in at 25.39. Schrunk and Traci Hawley led a UNI sweep of the 1,000 meters, as well, with Schrunk taking the win in a personal-best 2:58.90. Hawley was runner-up in 2:59.31, trimming nearly 13 seconds off her previous personal-best time. UNI claimed four of the top-five places in the 60 hurdles, led by Olimpia Nowak's runner-up time of 8.79, the fastest time by a Panther this year. Cali Lyons was third in 8.88, followed by Dani Stipe's fourth-place finish in 8.91. Jessica Hale took fifth in 8.98. Senior Rachel Jansen swept the women's throws events with wins in the shot put (52 feet, 5 1/4 inches) and weight throw (60-4 1/2). Teammate Sarah Harms took runner-up honors in the weight throw, posting a heave of 54-5 1/4. In the women's high jump, senior Crystal Hanson posted her second-best effort of the season in clearing 5 feet, 7 3/4 inches to take the win. She distanced herself from the field by 4 3/4 inches. The Panthers also earned a sweep of the top two spots in the long jump, with Nowak posting the Panthers' best mark of the season at 19-4 3/4 to take the win. Teammate Jamie Wieck was second with a leap of 18-6. Freshman Holli Hosch, who also anchored the Panthers' winning effort in the 4x400 relay, took the runner-up spot in the open 400 meters, clocking in at 58.53. Amanda Huling claimed the 600 meters in 1:38.67, her best effort of the season in the event. Kindelsperger, who ran the second leg of UNI's second effort in the 4x400, was fifth in the 800 meters in 2:20.11. The Panthers return to action next weekend as hosts of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships. The meet begins with multi-event competition at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (March 1) and concludes on Sunday in the UNI-Dome. |
