Cedar Falls, Iowa - Under sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s throughout most of the afternoon, the University of Northern Iowa hosted its annual Messersmith Invitational track and field meet today. A total of fifteen teams from throughout the Midwest were on hand at Mark Messersmith Outdoor Track and Field Complex on UNI's campus.

The Panthers had a pair of NCAA Regional qualifiers on the day. Junior Yuriy Litvinski (Sliven, Bulgaria), competing for the first time this season outdoors, won the triple jump with a regional qualifying mark of 50-4 ¾. Junior Kyle Smith (Toronto, Canada) also regionally qualified, as he finished second in the 800 meters in a time of 1:50.38. UNI went 2-3-4 in the 800, with Dylan Davis (Adel, Iowa) third in 1:50.70, and Tyler Mulder (Orange City, Iowa) fourth in 1:50.93.

UNI's outstanding sophomore thrower, Rachel Jansen (Orange City, Iowa), set yet another school record today. Her winning toss of 176-7 in the hammer eclipsed the old mark of 169-6, which was set by teammate Ivana Barsic (Zagreb, Croatia) in 2005. Jansen won three events on the day, also claming titles in the discus (166-1) and shot put (50-4 ½). Jansen now holds UNI's school records in all three outdoor throwing events, having set each within the last three weeks. Fellow thrower Morgen Edwards (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) also had a solid day, finishing runner up in both the discus (144-8) and shot (44-9 ¾)

Numerous other Panther athletes had noteworthy performances. The Panthers claimed championships in both the men's and women's 100 meter dashes, as Patrick Hunter (Racine, Wis.) won the men's 100 in 10.67, while Meredith Kosmacek (Persia, Iowa) won the women's in a personal-best time of 12.10. Hunter also anchored UNI's 4x100 relay team to victory in a time of 41.18.

Jamie Hutchinson (Charles City, Iowa) won the women's 800 meters in a time of 2:11.37, while teammate Angie German (Manchester, Iowa) was third with a time of 2:16.61. Freshman Greg Offerman (Charles City, Iowa) won the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 52.83, and UNI went 1-2 in the women's 3000 meters behind Traci Hawley (Ames, Iowa) and Val Crutchley (Mt. Vernon, Iowa) who ran 10:30.08 and 11:00.36, respectively. The Panthers women's 4x400 team of Pam Kyerematong (Accra, Ghana), Hutchinson, Lauren Carruthers (Betterndorf, Iowa) and German claimed victory in a time of 3:47.63. In addition, freshman Marcin Kazubowski (Gdansk, Poland) won the javelin with a throw of 194-1.
