Manhatten, Kan. -

On a sweltering afternoon at R.V. Christian Track Complex, the Nike Combined Events Challenge kicked off with Lela Nelson of the United States holding the individual lead in the heptathlon and Jacob Minah of Germany leading the decathlon.

All of the athletes battled through temperatures of 103 degrees to complete the first day of competition. UNI assistant track and field coach Travis Geopfert, competing in his fourth USA vs. Germany decathlon meet, stands in 12th place and 372 points behind leader Minah.

Geopfert placed 10th in the 100-meter dash (11.31) and fifth in the shot put with a throw of 47-3.50. With a leap of 21-11.75, he placed 10th in the long jump and then 13th in the high jump (6-00.75).  Geopfert finished off day one competition with a fourth-place finish, the best USA performance, in the 400-meter dash (50.44).

Geopfert tallied a seventh-place finish in the 2005 event with 7,525 points and took home the bronze in the 2003 duel meet. He won the 2006 Drake Relays decathlon with 7,216 points.
