University of Northern Iowa freshman Thibault Vandenabeele improved his personal-best time by nearly 30 seconds at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championships held in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 23.

"We couldn't be happier with the way Thibault competed," UNI head coach Dan Steele said. "For a freshman to run his best race at the NCAA Championships is just terrific. This experience will pay big dividends down the road. Coach (Dave) Paulsen has done a great job with these cross country kids this season. The future of UNI cross country looks very bright."

The Panther freshman placed 90th in the meet with a time of 30:50.4. His time placed him fifth on the all-time best list at UNI.

After finishing 17th at the Midwest Regional Championship on Nov. 14, Vandenabeele earned an automatic qualifying bid to compete in this year's NCAA Championships. At the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championships, Vandenabeele competed in a field of 250 runners.
