Marty Sutherland was promoted to full-time status in the summer of 2005 after spending two years as a volunteer assistant coach. He deals primarily with outfielders, hitters, handles team travel and camps and serves as the team's recruiting coordinator. "Marty has done a great job for us the last two years as our volunteer coach and we are happy to move him into a fulltime position on our staff," Heller said. "Marty is a hard worker, great teacher and works well with the players. He's a great young coach and we are excited that he will be with us full-time." A 2002 graduate, Sutherland was an all-conference second baseman in 2002. During his two seasons on the field, he had a .318 batting average with 25 doubles and 29 stolen bases. He also finished his career with 64 RBI. As a senior, he batted .282 with seven doubles and a home run. He led the team in stolen bases with 19 while having a .942 field percentage at second. Sutherland was a part of the 2001 team that won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship and played in the NCAA Regional. During that season, he was named second team all-conference while hitting .349. Before coming to UNI, he spent two seasons at Kirkwood Community College. After graduation, he spent the 2003 season as an assistant coach at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Currently, he is pursuing a graduate degree in Physical Education. He is a native of Cascade, Iowa. |
