Box Score

FONSECA, PANTHERS TOP BOWLING GREEN 4-3

BRADENTON, Fla. - Guido Fonseca tossed a gem and the offense did just enough to lift the University of Northern Iowa baseball team to victory. Fonseca tossed seven solid innings en route to his second win in purple and gold.

The Falcons started things off with a run in the top of the first, but Dane Embury (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) slammed a bases-loaded two-run single to give UNI a 2-1 edge. Embury's hit scored Curt Bradley (Colombia, Mo./Rock Bridge) and Brandon Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa/I-35) who reached on a fielder's choice and a single to center, respectively.

Deric Manrique's (Sioux City, Iowa/North) second-inning RBI groundout scored Eddie Almonte (Santo Domingo, DR) and gave the Panthers a 3-1 advantage through two.

Bradley slapped a two out double to right center in the fourth to score Travis Hendrix (Sonora, Calif./Sonora) and extend UNI's advantage to 4-1.

A Bowling Green two-run double in the eighth brought the Falcons within one, but the UNI pitching staff stepped up in the ninth and closed the door on the rally and took home the 4-3 win.

Starter Guido Fonseca (East Covina, Calif.) was brilliant in seven innings of work. The junior struck out three and allowed three earned runs, though two of them scored after he had left the game. Fonseca's effort earned him his second win of the season and put his record at 2-1 on the year. Jason Barry (Chilliwack, Canada) entered in the ninth and forced a double play to end the game. Barry earned his second save of the year with a 0.2 inning effort.

Embury led the Panther offense with two RBIs. The junior finished 1-3 on the day. Manrique and Bradley tallied a pair of hits and both drove in one. As a team, the Panthers tallied seven hits.

UNI improves to 5-7 on the year. Bowling Green falls to 7-4 overall.

The Panthers take on Fairfield, Sunday at 7 pm eastern time.
