PANTHERS ROUT EASTERN KENTUCKY 19-3

 

BRADENTON, Fla. - The pitching staff was dialed in and the Panther offense fired on all cylinders to power the University of Northern Iowa baseball team to a convincing 19-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky. The offense tallied 20 hits on the day with Travis Henrix leading the way with four.

 

The Panthers scored runs in six of nine innings, including seven in the second, three in the fourth and fifth and four in the eighth.

 

Hendrix (Sonora, Calif./Sonora) smacked singles in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings and scored a run in the second. He finished the day 4-5 with a run scored and three RBIs.

 

Dane Embury (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) led the team with four RBIs, three coming on a bases-loaded triple to right-centerfield in the second inning. All told, Embury finished the day 2-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs.

 

Eric Hoffmann (Erskine, Minn./Win-E-Mac) came off the bench in the fifth and went 3-3 with three RBIs. Hoffmann came in for Nick Cameron (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) who drove in two and scored a run before coming out after the fifth. Brett Featherston (Epworth, Iowa/Western Dubuque) went 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored despite taking three hit-by-pitches.

 

On the mound, Nick Kirk (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) cruised through five innings en route to his first win of 2007. The sophomore allowed four hits and struck out four without allowing an earned run for in the win. His record is now 1-0 on the season.

 

Tim Flattery (Fort Dodge, Iowa/St. Edmond) struck out four and allowed a run in a two-inning appearance. Alex Meyer (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) pitched the eighth and ninth and allowed just one hit and struck out two in his first appearance as a Panther.

 

The win brings UNI's record back to .500 at 7-7 overall.

 

The Panthers take on Bucknell Wednesday, March 14. First pitch is at 2 p.m. central time.
