SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -

The University of Northern Iowa baseball team rallied back from a 6-0 first-inning deficit to claim a 9-8 extra-inning win at Missouri State on Saturday. Deric Manrique was 4-of-5 from the plate with two doubles, a run and three RBIs for UNI.

Jason Barry allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings to earn the win.

The Bears (12-9, 1-1 MVC) loaded the bases with no outs on an error and two singles in the bottom of the first. Ryan Mantle put Missouri State on the board with a grand slam to left center that put the Bears in front, 4-0. The Bears added another run when a single by Clay Coulter scored Brayden Drake from second. Later in the inning, Tanner Mattson reached on an error, scoring Ben Carlson from second to put MSU in front 6-0 at the end of the first.

The Panthers (11-9, 1-1 MVC) started to chip away at the Missouri State lead in the top of the second when Brandon Douglas singled up the middle, and then Eric Hoffman homered into left to bring the score to 6-2. Jordan Kraayenbrink was hit by a pitch and Jeremy Weih walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Deric Manrique hit his second double of the game to score Kraayenbrink and move Weih to third. A sacrifice fly to right by Curt Bradley scored Kraayenbrink and made the score 6-4 in favor of MSU.

In the top of the third, Hoffman and Kraayenbrink each singled and Travis Hendrix was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Scott Carroll struck out Weih, but Manrique singled to left center to score Hoffman and Kraayenbrink, tying the game 6-6.  With two out and bases loaded, Dane Embury drilled a line drive down the right-field line, but MSU first baseman Carlson made a diving catch to rob the hit and keep the score tied at six.

Missouri State went back in front in the bottom of the sixth when Mantle singled to left to score Nolan Keane.

In the top of the eighth, Manrique collected a one-out infield single and stole second. He advanced to third when Curt Bradley struck out but reached safely on a wild pitch to put runners on the corners with one out. Manrique tied the game at seven when he scored on a wild pitch, and Bradley advanced all the way to third when the Bears' catcher overthrew pitcher Matt Frevert in an attempt to tag out Manrique. A deep fly by Dane Embury allowed Bradley to tag up and score, putting UNI in the lead for the first time in the game, 8-7.

Woodbury led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and then stole second. A one-out single by Matt Lawson scored Woodbury and tied the game at 8-8.

In the top of the tenth, UNI loaded the bases with no outs when Manrique was hit by a pitch, Bradley walked, and Embury was hit by a pitch. Featherston grounded into a fielder's choice, with the MSU first baseman throwing out Manrique at the plate, but all other runners advanced.

Bradley scored the go-ahead run on a past ball with Brandon Douglas batting. Douglas hit a fly into center that looked like it would score an additional run for UNI, but Embury was called out for leaving third too early, and the double play ended the inning.

Tim Flattery came in the bottom of the tenth to retire three straight Bears, sealing the win for UNI and earning his first save of the season.

The Panthers' nine runs came on 11 hits and one MSU error. Missouri State scored their runs on eight hits and four UNI errors.

The rubber game of the series will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m.
