Final Stats

            OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Northern Iowa baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Creighton on Sunday, falling 10-5 in the first game and 8-1 in the second to give the series sweep to the Bluejays.

UNI first baseman Brett Featherston hit a three-run home run in the first game to tie the game at 5-5, but the Bluejays (18-8, 5-1) tacked on five unanswered runs in the final four innings to take a 10-5 win. Nine of Creighton's 10 runs came on two outs.

In game two, UNI (11-14, 1-5) out-hit Creighton 6-5, but was only able to push one run across the plate in the 8-1 loss.

In the first game of the day, Curt Bradley singled to the left side to lead off the top of the second. He stole second then advanced to third on a ground ball by Jordan Kraayenbrink. Travis Hendrix drove a fastball up the middle for a single, scoring Bradley and putting UNI in front 1-0.

With two runners on and two outs, Creighton put together five hits and a walk to score five runs and build a 5-1 lead at the end of the second inning.

The Panthers got one run back in the top of the fourth after Brandon Douglas doubled to right center to lead off the inning. He advanced to third on a throwing error by Creighton, and then scored on a ground ball by Bradley to pull UNI within three runs, 5-2.

Eric Hoffman started a two-out rally in the top of the fifth with a single up the middle. Dane Embury followed with a single off the glove of Creighton pitcher Zak Moore. Brett Featherston lifted a 2-0 pitch over the right field wall for a three-run home run to tie the game at 5-5.

Brett Mieras put Creighton in front 6-5 when he scored from third on a wild pitch with bases loaded and two out.

In the bottom of the seventh Chad Ogden drilled a triple down the left-field line and into the Panther bull pen, scoring Steve Winkelmann and putting CU in front 7-5.

Darin Ruf hit a two-run home run with two outs, scoring Chris Gradoville who reached on a two-out single. Andrew Small followed with a triple, and Winkelmann brought him home with a single to make the score 10-5.

Nick Kirk took the loss for UNI, falling to 1-1 on the season. Kirk allowed six runs on six hits, striking out one and walking five through five innings. Casey Schmidt earned the win for Creighton. Featherston was 1-of-3 in the game with 3 RBIs, and Travis Hendrix was 2-of-4 with an RBI for UNI.

In game two, Creighton plated a run in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bluejays added two more in the bottom of the second when Winkelman was hit by a pitch and Andy Masten followed with a two-run home run to left, putting Creighton in front 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Michael Lam scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Darin Ruf to tack on another run for Creighton. In the bottom of the seventh, Ruf hit a grand slam over the right field wall to extend the Bluejay lead to 8-0.

UNI's lone run came in the top of the ninth when Gabe Schultz connected for a two-out hit to left with bases loaded, scoring Boone Bugger who had reached on a two-out double.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday when they play at Northern Illinois. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
