Box Score

PANTHERS FALL 7-1 TO MINNESOTA

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The offense managed just one hit and the pitchers allowed seven runs to spell doom for the University of Northern Iowa baseball team. The Panthers fell 7-1 to the Gophers.

Minnesota opened the contest with two runs in the bottom of the first, and later took a 4-0 lead after two unearned runs in the third.

Angelo Cordova (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) took the ball for the start and logged two innings of work. The junior allowed two earned runs on two hits and a pair of walks.

Chad Epperson (Tulsa, Okla.) took the ball from Cordova and endured a shaky third inning. The senior settled in and sat down the Gopher lineup in order in the fourth after allowing two unearned runs in the third.

Zach Zirbel (Ventura, Iowa/Clear Lake) entered in the fifth and allowed a run on a sac-fly. The run put the score at 5-0 through five innings in favor of Minnesota.

Tim Smid (Remsen, Iowa/St. Mary's) took over pitching duties in the sixth and gave up a home run to start the inning. He allowed a double off the left field wall to the following batter, but locked in to record two outs before leaving the game in favor of Nick Kirk (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert). Kirk allowed an unearned run to cross the plate, but rebounded to end the inning with the Panthers trailing 7-0.

Deric Manrique (Sioux City, Iowa/North) scored on a passed ball after walking to start the inning. The run brought the score to 7-1.

Tim Flattery (Fort Dodge, Iowa/St. Edmond) finished out the game for the Panthers in the eighth. The UNI offense went down in order in the ninth, securing a 7-1 loss.

Cordova took the loss after falling behind early. Panther pitchers allowed seven runs on 10 hits in the loss.

The Panther offense managed just one hit, a single by Manrique, in the contest.

UNI falls to 12-17 overall. The Gophers improve to 18-6 on the season.

The Panthers head to Evansville for a three-game set with the Purple Aces this weekend.
