Final Stats

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa baseball team was held to three hits in its game at Evansville Friday afternoon, dropping the series opener, 9-1. The Panthers put only four runners in scoring position, and only six Panthers reached base safely in the contest.

Taylor Sinclair (1-2) took the loss for UNI, and Ben Norton (7-2) claimed the win for the Aces.

Evansville (24-12, 6-4 MVC)  went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Jeff Zelenovich scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Troy Krider.

UNI (put runners in scoring position for the first time in the game when Brett Featherston drew a two-out walk and Jamie Ballesteros followed with a double into right-center field. Travis Hendrix drove a full-count pitch into center, but Evansville's Jim Viscomi was able to track it down to record the out and end the Panther rally.

UNI retired the first two batters in the bottom of the fourth, but two singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Robbie Minor drew a full-count walk to score Kirk Bacsu, and Sinclair hit Kasey Wahl on the next pitch to score Troy Krider and give Evansville a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bacsu hit a one-out single into right to score Tristan Facer and Kern Watts and put the Aces in front, 5-0. Evansville tacked on another run after Bacsu stole second, advanced to third on a balk, and then scored on a wild pitch.

Facer reached on an error in the bottom of the eighth, and Zelenovich was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. The runners advanced on a balk, and a sacrifice fly by Watts scored Facer. Bacsu drove in Zelenovich from second with a single, putting the Aces in front 8-0. Evansville threatened to add even more in that frame, but Gabe Schultz made a diving catch of a line drive to rob Krider of a hit, and he was able to throw out Bacsu at first to complete the double play and end the inning.

The Aces tacked on their final run in the bottom of the eighth when Minor walked, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Wahl.

Dane Embury doubled to right to lead off the top of the ninth. With two outs, Evansville second baseman Krider could not handle a ground ball by Travis Hendrix, and the error allowed Embury to score from second.

The Panthers and Aces resume the series on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
