Panthers Pound Out 15 Hits in 15-10 Win at IowaApril 17, 2007 IOWA CITY, Iowa -
The University of Northern Iowa baseball team saw all nine starters reach base and score as the Panthers used 15 hits to top in-state foe Iowa 15-10 Tuesday night in Iowa City. The teams combined for 33 hits in the contest, and Deric Manrique, Eric Hoffmann, Brandon Douglas and Curt Bradley each tallied three hits in the win. Taylor Sinclair earned the win for UNI, giving up nine hits and three runs in five innings. Andrew Porter took the loss for Brett Featherston was hit by the first pitch of the second inning, and Dane Embury and Curt Bradley followed with singles to load the bases. Jeremy Weih grounded out on the right side, but Featherston was able to score on the play to put the Panthers in front, 1-0. With runners on second and third and two out, Travis Hendrix looked to add to the Panther lead with a bloop fly into right, but Iowa's right fielder Matt Wooldrik made a diving catch to end the inning. Kevin Hoef led off the bottom half of the inning with a single into left. He stole second, and with two out Ben Geelen hit a double into left to score Hoef and tie the game. Jason White followed with a single through the right side to put the Hawkeyes in front, 2-1. Deric Manrique drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the top of the third. He stole second, and Eric Hoffmann brought him home with a single into center. Brandon Douglas doubled down the right field line, moving Hoffmann to third, and Featherston was hit by a pitch for the second time to load the bases with no one out. Embury hit a long sacrifice fly into left to score Hoffmann and move the runners to second and third. Weih walked to lead off the fourth, and The Hawkeyes pulled within 8-5 after scoring two in the bottom of the seventh. UNI responded with seven runs in the top of the eighth inning, all of them coming on two outs and all of them unearned. The Hawkeyes used four hits, a walk and a hit batsman to bat around and score five in the bottom half of the eighth, cutting the Panther advantage to 15-10, which would go on to be the final.
