Box Score

Des Moines, Iowa -

The University of Northern Iowa baseball team turned a season high four double plays Wednesday evening, but could not hang on to a 4-1 lead against Nebraska. The Panthers lost 7-4 at the home of the Iowa Cubs, Principal Park in Des Moines.

Junior Nate Trumm was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while redshirt freshman David Westergaard and freshman Brett Douglas tallied two hits. Senior Kory Kelchen pitched 5.0 innings, allowing only four hits and one earned run.

UNI took advantage of three walks in the first inning. Trumm sliced a single to plate Pat Moran and Clayton Daniels recorded an RBI walk. The first three innings for Nebraska were three-up, three-down as UNI played outstanding defense; Moran jumped to catch a line drive at shortstop and Trumm gunned down a runner stealing second.

Husker Alex Gordon, hailed as a first round draft pick, knocked his 13th home run of the season in the fourth inning, putting NU on the board. UNI then shut down the Cornhuskers for two innings, recording a double play in the fourth, fifth and sixth, once with bases loaded.

Sophomore Ryan Norman laid a bunt straight down the third base line for a lead-off single in the bottom of the fifth and Brett Douglas pushed him to third on a two-out double. UNI then scored two runs on an error by the Husker shortstop to take a 4-1 lead.

NU topped UNI 5-4 in the seventh inning on six hits and one Panther error. Five consecutive singles to lead off the inning tallied four Husker runs. The Panthers were held to two hits in the final three innings, while NU scored once in both the eighth and ninth innings.

This is the second top 25 opponent UNI has played this season and third Big 12 team. UNI left 12 runners stranded while Nebraska recorded a season-high two errors.

UNI falls to 14-21, 2-10 in the Valley. Nebraska is now 32-7, 8-4 in the Big 12. UNI hosts North Dakota State Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium.
