Box Score

Terre Haute, Ind. -

Senior Clayton Daniels (Moulton, Iowa/Moulton-Udell) tied the game in the top of the eighth with a pinch hit, grand slam. However, the University of Northern Iowa baseball squad fell to Indiana State this afternoon, 8-7, in 10 innings. An RBI triple by Sycamore Ryan Bond plated the game-winning run for the Sycamores and gave UNI a 0-4 record in extra inning affairs.

Once again, sophomore Bryan Westphal (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) helped UNI's defense out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth, recording the final out on strikes and stranding the bases loaded. He also struck out two in the ninth. Sophomore Taylor Sinclair (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) worked 6.1 innings on the mound, striking out two and senior Drew Wold (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) took the loss, giving up two hits in the final frame.

Redshirt freshman Brandon Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa/I-35) went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and his third home run of the season.  Senior Pat Moran (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) also was 3-for-5 with a double.  Daniels led the squad with four RBI.

The teams traded two runs in the fourth inning.  Moran led off the frame with a double to center field and UNI put runners on first and third as Brandon Douglas sent a single to right field. Junior Nick Cameron (West Des Moines, Iowa/Indian Hills/Valley) and sophomore Brett Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa/I-35) then plated the runners later with fielder's choice balls.

Third baseman Kyle Kolb tallied a two-RBI double in the bottom of the inning to knot the score, 2-2. Indiana State's offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth inning; it scored five runs on three hits, including a Kyle Kolb three-RBI home run to left field. Brandon Douglas sent his solo shot to left field in the sixth, bringing UNI to within four, 7-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, shortstop Brandon Douglas fielded a ball to his left, stepped on second and threw to first to complete the Panthers' third double play of the game, a season-high.

Moran opened up the eighth frame with a single to right center, Featherston walked and Cameron singled to right to load the bases.  Brett Douglas then reached first when Moran was caught at home, keeping the bases stacked for pinch hitter Daniels. Daniels then launched a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence, his third homer of the season.

UNI (19-20, 4-7 MVC) and Indiana State (18-21, 4-7 MVC) fight for the series win tomorrow.  First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. central.
