WATERLOO, Iowa -

The University of Northern Iowa baseball team collected 13 hits in an 8-5 win over North Dakota State at Riverfront Stadium Sunday afternoon. Deric Manrique and Eric Hoffmann each hit 3-of-4 in the game. Manrique, Dane Embury and Brandon Douglas each hit home runs in the Panther victory.

Guido Fonseca (4-4) earned the win for UNI, giving up two hits and one run in 3.1 innings of relief. Matt Mossey took the loss for NDSU, surrendering seven runs, four earned, on 11 hits in 6.0 innings.

Greg Plecki put the Bison in front for the first time in the series when he hit a solo home run to left center in the top of the first. Dane Embury tied the game at one with a solo shot over the left-field wall in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the third, Eric Hoffmann drew a two-out walk, and Brandon Douglas homered to left center to put UNI in front 3-1.

Billy Gazich led off the top of the fifth with a single. Matt Watson drew a one-out walk, and Gazich scored on a Panther throwing error after a single by Matt Mossey. Watson scored and Mossey moved to third on a ground out by Plecki. Mossey scored on a passed ball to put the Bison in the lead, 4-3.

The Panthers put their first five batters on base safely in the bottom half of the inning, starting with Brett Featherston who reached second on a throwing error by the NDSU first baseman. He moved to third on a single by Embury, then scored on a fielder's choice by Jordan Kraayenbrink. Travis Hendrix and Jaime Ballesteros hit consecutive singles, scoring Kraayenbrink. Hendrix and Ballesteros scored on a two-out single up the middle by Hoffmann to put UNI in front 7-4.

UNI tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run by Deric Manrique.

Kenny Beese hit a two-out single into right center to score Gavin Hofer, who reached on a walk. The hit put runners on the corners and brought the tying run to the plate. Tim Flattery struck out Shannon Ekermans to end the game and earn the save.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday when they host Upper Iowa at 6:30 p.m.
