Box Score

Terre Haute, Ind. -

Despite a major power effort by first baseman Brett Featherston, the University of Northern Iowa baseball team fell 17-7 in eight innings to Indiana State this afternoon.

Featherston (Epworth, Iowa/Western Dubuque) went 3-for-4 with two homers and one double, tallying five of the Panthers' seven RBI and scoring three runs. He increased his season team-leading totals to 42 RBI, six home runs and 21 extra base hits. Sophomore Curt Bradley (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Nine pitchers took the mound for UNI and senior Jake Hansen (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) picked up the loss, pitching two innings.

Featherston gave UNI a quick 3-0 lead in the first, slamming his fifth homer of the season off the upper half of the right field foul pole. He plated senior Pat Moran (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) and junior Nick Cameron (West Des Moines, Iowa/Indian Hills/Valley) who were hit by pitch and walked, respectively.

The Sycamores also got on the board fast, scoring two runs on two hits in the bottom of the frame. INS then took a 5-3 advantage in the second inning as Andrew Strange and Kory Kral picked up RBI singles after a Ryan Bond double to right field.

The Sycamores tacked on another run on a Kolb sacrifice fly in the fourth frame. INS led off the fifth inning with back-to-back singles and Strange plated one runner with a groundout to first base. Brewer also recorded an RBI single, giving INS an 8-3 lead.

Featherston struck again in the top of the sixth, sending his second home run of the day well over the scoreboard in right center field and also scoring freshman Brandon Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa/I-35) who reached on a single.

The Sycamores extended their lead to 12-5 in the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits, all for extra bases.  UNI cut the Sycamores lead in the top of the eighth.  Featherston led off with his third hit, a double to left center, and he came home on a single by Bradley up the middle. Bradley then sprinted around the bases on a senior Clayton Daniels' double to left field.

The Sycamores closed out the game with five runs in the bottom of the eighth, ten-running the Panthers.

UNI (19-21, 4-8 MVC) takes on Iowa at the Corridor Classic in Cedar Rapids Wednesday and hosts Southern Illinois Friday-Sunday at Riverfront Stadium.
