WATERLOO, Iowa -

The University of Northern Iowa baseball team outhit Indiana State 16-11 on Saturday, but five errors and 10 walks by the Panthers proved costly, and the Sycamores took a 13-9 win at Riverfront Stadium. Deric Manrique was 4-of-6 for UNI, with two RBIs. The loss ends a five-game win streak for the Panthers.

Nick Kirk (3-2) took the loss for UNI (18-20, 4-10), allowing six runs, three earned, in five innings pitched. Matt Shelton earned the win for Indiana State, allowing five funs, three earned, on nine hits through five innings. Adam Lindsay earned his second save of the season, contributing four innings to the Sycamores' cause.

Manrique, Eric Hoffmann and Brandon Douglas strung together consecutive singles to lead off the bottom of the first inning and give UNI a 1-0 advantage. With bases loaded and two down, Boone Bugger drew a walk to put the Panthers in front 2-0 after the first frame.

In the top of the fourth, Nick Ciolli and Casey Martin hit back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on first and second. Kirk fielded a ground ball and tried to get Martin out at second, but the throw went into center field, allowing Ciolli to score on the play and putting runners on the corners with one out. Brett Featherston caught a pop up by Andrew Strange and was able to throw over to third before Martin tagged up, completing the double play and ending the inning with UNI in front, 2-1.

The Panthers got that run back in the bottom half of the inning. Eddie Almonte reached on an error to lead off the inning, and he stole second and then scored on a single by Manrique. UNI tacked on two more in the fifth. Travis Hendrix drew a one-out walk, and Almonte followed with a single. Hendrix and Almonte advanced on a passed ball, and both scored on a single up the middle by Nick Cameron, putting the Panthers in front, 5-1.

Indiana State (19-20, 3-11) put its first six batters on safely in the top of the sixth, and five of those came around to score. Brett Siegmund started the inning with a walk, and Ciolli collected an in-field single. Martin was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Ryan Strausbourger singled to score Siegmund. John Feltner hit a ground ball to the infield, and when Featherston tried to turn the double play the throw went into the outfield, scoring two. A sacrifice fly by Josh Abercrombie scored Strausbourger, and a single from Dave Brumagin plated Feltner to put the Sycamores in front, 6-5.

ISU added four more in the seventh on two hits, two walks, two wild pitches and two Panther errors, taking a 10-5 lead into the bottom half of the inning.

Jamie Ballesteros was hit by a pitch, and Embury and Hendrix each hit singles to load the bases. Almonte hit a two-RBI single up the middle, and Cameron followed with a single to re-load the bases. A single by Manrique drove in another Panther run, pulling UNI within two, 10-8. With one out, Hoffmann flied out to left, and Almonte was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the play.

Siegmund singled and Ciolli doubled to left to lead off the top of the eighth. They each came around to score before the Panthers retired the side, taking a 12-8 lead.

Ballesteros hit a one-out, solo home run in the bottom half of the frame to narrow the gap to 12-9 heading into the final frame.

With two out, Marcus Artner singled to score Seigmund in the top of the ninth. The Panthers were able to put two men on base in the bottom half of the inning, but they were unable to score.

The Panthers and Sycamores conclude the series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
