Box Score

Peoria, Ill. -

Despite establishing a 2-0 lead in the opening frames of the game, University of Northern Iowa baseball dropped its series opener at Bradley, 6-2, this evening.

Sophomore Brett Featherston (Epworth, Iowa/Western Dubuque) went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI.  Sophomores Curt Bradley (Columbia, Mo.) and Brett Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) each tallied two hits.  UNI became only the second conference team to record more than one run off Bradley ace Brandon Magee who improved to 7-3 on the season.

Senior Zach Jevne (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) worked 6.1 innings, striking out four and allowing no walks.  Junior Eric Hoffmann (Erskine, Minn./Win-E-Mac) and freshman Zach Zirbel (Clear Lake, Iowa) each pitched in relief.

UNI took an early 1-0 in the top of the second as Featherston led off the inning with a stand-up double to right field and then he took third on a Brandon Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa/I-35) bloop single into center field.  Bradley tallied the RBI, reaching first on an error by the Braves' second baseman.

With a two-out single up the middle Brandon Douglas reached first in the top of the third and Featherston brought Douglas home with his second double of the evening to right field. Back-to-back doubles by the Braves down the left field line gave Bradley one run in the bottom of the inning, making the score 2-1 in favor of UNI.

UNI left two runners stranded in the top of the fifth after Featherston was fanned by Brandon Magee and Brett Douglas notched a single; both runners then slid into scoring position on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Bradley took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth frame on five consecutive hits, one for extra bases. The Braves then sealed their lead in the eighth innings with two sacrifice flies to right field after loading the bases.

Bradley improves to 21-21, 10-8 in the MVC and UNI is now 22-23, 6-10 in the Valley.  The series continues tomorrow at 7 p.m.
