Box Score

After leading 4-2 through six innings, the University of Northern Iowa baseball team allowed four runs in the final three frame, falling 6-4 to No. 10 Wichita State Saturday at Riverfront Stadium. All of the Shockers' final four runs came with two outs. Brett Featherston was 2-of-4 at the plate with an RBI for the Panthers, and Jamie Ballesteros and Jeremy Weih each hit solo home runs for the Panthers.

Guido Fonseca pitched six innings in the start for UNI (19-23, 5-13), giving up four hits for two runs, only one earned, but he finished with a no-decision. Taylor Sinclair (2-5) took the loss for the Panthers, allowing four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.

Andy Womack earned the win for the Shockers (41-13, 17-4), holding UNI to one hit and one run through 2.2 innings of relief. Noah Booth earned the save for WSU.

Damon Sublett hit a one-out single to shallow left field in the top of the first. He moved to second on a ground out by Conor Gillaspie, and he scored on a single up the middle from Matt Brown to give WSU a 1-0 lead.

Deric Manrique (Sioux City, Iowa/ Sioux City North) and Eric Hoffmann (Erskine, Minn./ Win-E-Mac) hit consecutive singles to lead off the bottom of the inning. Brandon Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa/I-35 Truro) grounded into a double play, but Manrique was able to score from third on the play to tie the game, 1-1.

In the bottom of the third, Jeremy Weih hit a lead-off home run just inside the left-field foul pole to give UNI a 2-1 advantage.

Wichita State tied the game in the top of the fourth when Brown hit a one-out single, moved to second on a balk, then took third and home on two passed balls.

The Panthers regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Dane Embury (Kelowna, B.C./ Kelowna) led off the inning with a double into left field.  Jamie Ballesteros (Huntington Park, Calif./ Malibu) drew a walk to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Nick Cameron (West Des Moines, Iowa/ Valley) singled into right, but Brown was able to gun down Embury at the plate. Brett Featherston hit a single off the right-field wall, and Ballesteros scored from second to give the Panthers the 3-2 lead.

Sublett led off the top of the sixth with a walk, and he moved to third on a one-out single by Brown, giving WSU runners at the corners with just one out. Fonseca sent down Danny Jackson swinging, and Manrique made a leaping grab of a long fly ball by Josh Workman to get the Panthers out of the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, Ballesteros hit a two-out solo home run over the right center wall to give UNI a 4-2 lead.

Tyler Weber led off the top of the seventh with a soft line into left. UNI retired the next two batters, but the Shockers used three straight singles and a Panther error to plate three and take a 5-4 lead.

WSU added a run in the top of the eighth when Sublett hit a single into right, just off the tip of the glove of a diving Embury, to score Bret Bascue and make the score 6-4.

The Panthers put base runners on in both the eighth and nine innings, but they were unable to score another run in the loss.
