Box Score

Peoria, Ill. -

University of Northern Iowa baseball dropped game two to Bradley, 10-9, this evening.  The Panthers outscored the Braves 6-1 in the final five frames, but could not overcome a third and fourth inning surge by Bradley.

Four Panthers had a multiple-hit game as UNI outhit the Braves 14-12.  Senior Mark Frieske (Spokane, Wash.) went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and redshirt freshman Brandon Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) had three hits, scored twice and plated two runners.  Sophomore Curt Bradley (Columbia, Mo.) went 3-for-6 and scored three times, once on a wild pitch from second base.

Sophomore starter Taylor Sinclair (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) fell to 5-5 on the season, pitching three innings and giving up five runs on seven hits. Sophomores Robert Rodriguez (Hialeah, Fla.) and Mark Bennett (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), freshman Zach Zirbel (Clear Lake, Iowa) and senior Drew Wold (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) all pitched in relief.

UNI's offense exploded in the first, tallying four hits off Bradley right-hander Michael Christl who started for the first time since March 17.  Three consecutive singles by Frieske, Bradley and Brandon Douglas led off the first frame. Frieske scored on Douglas' single to right field and then Brett Featherston (Epworth, Iowa) walked to load the bases. Sophomore Brett Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) ground into a double play which scored Bradley from third and junior Nick Cameron (West Des Moines, Iowa) plated Brandon Douglas with a single to right, giving UNI a 3-0 lead.

The Panthers surrendered five runs to Bradley in the bottom of the third inning on six hits and two errors and then the Braves tacked on another four in the following frame. A two-RBI double by Dan Brewer gave the Braves a 9-3 lead in the fourth which they were able to sustain for the remainder of the game.

UNI managed to score two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, narrowing Bradley's lead to 9-7.  Curt Bradley led off the fifth with an infield single and then Brandon Douglas knocked a double to left field.  Bradley advanced home on a groundout to second base and then Douglas scored on a wild pitch.

Given an inch in the sixth frame, UNI took a mile. Frieske tallied a two-out single and stole second.  He then scored on a Bradley single to left; Bradley advanced to second on the throw and then took off to home on a wild pitch.

The Braves plated their 10th run of the evening, a much-needed security blanket, in the bottom of the sixth. UNI notched one run in both the eighth and ninth innings, but unfortunately left the bases loaded in final frame.

The final game of the series has been moved up to 12:00 p.m. Sunday to allow more time between the Bradley/UNI game and the Peoria Chiefs Minor League game.  UNI is now 22-24, 6-11 in the MVC.
