Box Score

Wichita, Kan. -

Senior Zach Jevne struck out seven in his second career complete game, helping the University of Northern Iowa baseball team break Wichita State's 10-game home win streak with a 3-1 victory.  The streak was tied for the second longest active home win streak in the nation.  The Decorah, Iowa native allowed only one run and no extra base hits against the Valley's top hitting squad.

The Panthers outhit the Shockers 11-8, but left five runners stranded until the seventh inning when the runs started to come across for UNI.  Senior Nate Trumm (Worthington, Iowa) went 2-for-3, scoring the tying run in the seventh and tallying the go-ahead RBI in the eighth.  Senior Mark Frieske (Spokane, Wash.) and sophomore Brett Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) were both 2-for-5 with one run.

The Panthers turned two double plays and committed no errors in the contest which solidified an outstanding defensive effort by Jevne. Jevne improved to 6-5 on the season while WSU starter Aaron Shafer fell to 9-2.

WSU scored one run in the first inning off two lead-off hits and then was held scoreless for the remainder of the game. UNI cut its losses in the inning, turning a 3-6-3 double play which allowed one run to score but squelched two Shocker runners.  The Panthers drew up another double play in the fourth as shortstop Brandon Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) scooped a ball up the middle and tossed it to second baseman Frieske for one and then Frieske gunned down the runner at first for two.

Trumm singled to center field in the seventh and advanced to third on an overthrown pick-off attempt by Shafer. Trumm then scored the tying run on Deric Manrique fielder's choice ball up the middle. The catcher dropped a throw from the pitcher as Trumm was sliding into home plate.

Brett Douglas singled up the middle and then pinch hitter Clayton Daniels (Moulton, Iowa) hit to right field, sending Douglas to third, in the top of the eighth. Trumm brought the go-ahead run, 2-1, home on a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Panthers scored yet again in the ninth as Frieske reached first on an error by shortstop Noah Krol and he advanced home later in the inning on an overthrow by the catcher.

UNI improves to 25-24 and 8-11 in the MVC.  Wichita State is now 38-18, 13-9 in the Valley.

The last time UNI defeated Wichita State on the road was in 2002 and in the next two days the Panthers will attempt to take a road series from the Shockers for the first time.
