Wichita, Kan. -

University of Northern Iowa dropped game two to Wichita State, 6-2, Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.  The rubber game of the series will start at 1 p.m. Sunday.

 

The Panthers took one run in the first inning, loading the bases on two walks and a Brandon Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) single to left field. Sophomore Brett Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) then brought home sophomore Curt Bradley (Columbia, Mo.) with a short sacrifice fly to left field.

 

The Shockers tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Derek Schermerhorn snuck a double through the left side of the infield and he eventually scored on an infield single by Conor Gillaspie.

 

WSU went up 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Josh Workman led off with a homer to right field. The Panthers then closed out the inning with three consecutive assists from second baseman Mark Frieske.

 

The Shockers took a significant lead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs on three hits and two free passes to first. Brian Spear tallied a two-RBI single in the inning, giving WSU a 6-1 lead.

 

Junior Eric Hoffmann (Erskine, Minn.) scored UNI's second run of the day in the top of the ninth.  He was fanned to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a single by senior Nate Trumm.  He then came home on a 6-4-3 double play by WSU.

 

Redshirt freshman Brandon Douglas went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and Brett Douglas recorded the Panthers' lone RBI.

 

Sophomore lefty Taylor Sinclair pitched 7.1 innings and only allowed two runs until the eighth frame. He falls to 5-6 on the season while WSU starter Travis Banwart is now 7-4.  Banwart pitched six innings and struck out four.

 

The Panthers are now 25-25, 8-12 in the MVC while WSU is 39-18, 14-9 in the Valley.
