Box Score

Wichita, Kan. -

University of Northern Iowa kept the Shockers scoreless until the seventh inning and then Wichita State scored 10 runs in the final two innings to defeat UNI 10-2 Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

The Panthers tabbed the first run of the game in the sixth frame.  Sophomore catcher Jason Smith (Sioux Falls, S.D.) led off with a single to right field, advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third on a pass ball.  Senior Mark Frieske (Spokane, Wash.) then sliced a single up the middle to score Smith.

UNI took a 2-0 lead in the seventh as sophomore Brett Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) singled up the middle and senior Pat Moran (Rapid City, S.D.) placed him on second with a sacrifice bunt.  Douglas later scored on a throwing error by catcher Brandon Hall as Hall was attempting to catch Douglas stealing third.

The Shockers ended the game on a scoring rampage, recording five runs in the seventh and five in the eighth.  Matt Brown tallied four RBI in the two innings alone, on two singles. Conor Gillaspie also had a two-RBI single in the seventh.

Frieske went 3-for-3 with an RBI and sophomore Curt Bradley (Columbia, Mo.) was 2-for-3.  Sophomore starter lefty Aaron Jenkins tallied three strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched and allowed five runs on six hits.  He fell to 3-1 on the season.

The Panthers are now 25-26, 8-13 in the MVC.  WSU improved to 40-18, 15-9 in the Valley.  UNI hosts Iowa Tuesday at Riverfront Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
