Box Score

Cedar Falls, Iowa -

A five-run Iowa fifth could not defeat the University of Northern Iowa baseball team on a wet Tuesday evening at Riverfront Stadium. The Panthers rallied from three down behind timely hitting from Brandon and Brett Douglas to take a 6-5 win and a 2-0 series sweep over the Hawkeyes.

After a spectacular double play from Brett Featherston (Epworth, Iowa) to Brandon Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) put the Hawks away in the first, Brett Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) pushed across the first run of the game with a line drive to right field, scoring Mark Frieske (Spokane, Wash.).

A double from Nate Trumm (Dyersville, Iowa) put Pat Moran (Rapid City, S.D.) at third with one away in the second. Deric Manrique (Sioux City, Iowa) slapped a bouncing single to the shortstop to score Moran and give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage after two.

Three pitchers surrendered five walks and two hits while the Panther defense committed a costly error and watched the two-run UNI advantage erode into a 5-2 Hawkeye lead in the fifth. All five Iowa runs were earned with three coming on RBI walks.

Brett Douglas sparked the Panther rally with a bounding base hit up the middle to score Frieske and chip one run off of the UI lead in the bottom of the frame.

After loading the bases in the sixth, Manrique stole home on a wild pitch and Brandon Douglas sliced a single past the third basemen to score two and give UNI a 6-5 lead. Two more Panther base runners packed the sacks for the second time in the inning, but Nick Cameron (Des Moines, Iowa) flew out to the left field warning track to end the Panther threat after capturing the lead.

Jesse Oster (Redding, Calif.) pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season after Panther pitching shutout the Hawkeye offense after the fifth. Mark Bennett (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) earned his first win of the season with a solid relief effort. The sophomore closed the door on the five-run Hawkeye fifth and tossed a scoreless sixth for the win.

The Panther staff walked seven Iowa batters on the night, but sat down 13 on strikes.

The Douglas brothers produced two hits and two RBI apiece while Frieske crossed the plate three times. Manrique finished the contest 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

UNI moves back to .500 on the season with a 26-26 mark. The Hawkeyes move to 23-29 on the season.

The Panthers host Creighton for their final home stand of the season this weekend. The three-game series begins Thursday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
