Box Score

Cedar Falls, Iowa -

The University of Northern Iowa baseball team rallied from a 6-

1 fourth inning deficit with 11 unanswered runs to take the 12-6 victory over Creighton Thursday evening. Senior Mark Frieske (Spokane, Wash.) led the way for UNI with a 4-5 showing.

A two-inning pitcher's duel came to a halt in the third with a Panther sac fly. Brandon Douglas (St. Charles, Iowa) lifted Bluejay pitcher Adam Schaecher's offering into center to score Frieske, but the Bluejay defense threw out Curt Bradley (Colombia, MO) at first base for the third out of the inning following Frieske's run.

A six-run Bluejay fourth put the Panthers in a 6-1 hole. Zach Daeges knocked a three-run homer over the right field fence and then Darin Ruf followed with another home run center field.

However, the Panthers stormed back from the deficit and regained control of the contest with an 11-run outburst over the final four innings following Creighton's fourth-inning offensive exhibition.

The Panther bats came to life in the last of the fifth with a pair of two-out hits by the top of the UNI lineup. Frieske slapped a single into center to score Boone Bugger (Bozeman, Mont.) and Bradley followed with a triple to the left field corner to push Frieske across. Brandon Douglas plated Bradley with a bunt single to bring the Panthers within two after five innings.

The Panthers would trail for just one inning more. Catcher Nate Trumm (Dyersville, Iowa) knotted the game at six in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run shot over the right field wall, his third of the season.

Two Bluejay errors helped the Panthers plate four runs in the seventh inning. Brett Featherston (Epworth, Iowa) and Brett Douglas kicked off the inning with a pair of singles before Creighton's defense handed a pair of extra outs to the UNI bats. A dropped fly ball and an error on Bluejay first baseman Ruf led to four unearned runs and a 10-6 UNI advantage.

An eighth inning two-run shot by Nick Cameron (Des Moines, Iowa), his fourth of the season, padded the Panther lead to 12-6 as the game entered the ninth. Eric Hoffmann (Erskine, Minn.) tossed the ninth and closed the door on the Bluejays to secure the 12-6 victory.

The Panther offense outhit Creighton, 15-9, behind a four-hit day from Frieske. The senior added two runs scored and two RBI on the day. Brandon Douglas, Cameron and Bugger added two hits each with Douglas and Cameron adding two RBI. Trumm drove in three and circled the bases in the sixth with his third homer of the season.

Zach Jevne (Decorah, Iowa) scattered nine hits and five earned runs over eight innings of work for his seventh win of the year. The senior struck out six and improved his record to 7-5. After surrendering five hits in the fourth inning, he only gave up two hits and struck out five in his final four frames.

UNI moves to 27-26 on the season, 9-13 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Creighton moves to 29-18 on the season, 12-10 in conference.

Game two of the UNI-Creighton series starts Friday at 6:30 p.m.
