Men's Basketball
Immediate Impact
Feb. 29, 2009 Johnny Moran has the face of a freshman. His wide-eyed demeanor and relentless hustle on the court are also characteristic of a newcomer. There are many indicators that affirm Moran's true freshman status. However, his statistics and overall attitude suggest a higher level of maturity. Moran leads the Panthers in steals and is second on the team in assists, three-pointers and minutes. He also provides a selfless attitude that has helped propel his team to the top of the MVC. Moran entered the program without much certainty of what his role would entail. "I was hoping to come in and get some playing time," said Moran. The freshman exceeded many's expectations, though, as he has been in the starting lineup since game one. Moran also averages the second most minutes played per game behind fellow guard Kwadzo Ahelegbe. Coming into the 2008-09 season, even Moran himself did not anticipate that he would be making such a significant impact for the Panthers. "I wasn't necessarily positive that I was going to start or not, but I just worked hard, trying to earn a spot somewhere on the team," said Moran. Don't ask Moran to comment much more on his personal performance, however. While many will dwell on their future and individual circumstances, Moran genuinely possesses a team-oriented mind-set. "I think I've probably exceeded some expectations, but I'm really focused on the team's expectations now," said Moran. Coming in and making an immediate impact on the court, Moran has been forced to mature quickly. At this time one year ago, he was competing for the Jacobs High School Golden Eagles, where he holds the school record for scoring, assists, steals and three-pointers. Moran, although highly successful in high school, felt that he had to make adjustments to his game to compete at the next level. "The strength of the guys and the speed of the game in general are a lot different than high school," said Moran. "There are still a lot of things I have to do, but getting experience in practice and going against my teammates in practice has been a big help." Moran attributes much to his teammates, whether it is his successes or even comfort in a new atmosphere. "I'm just another one of the guys. I'm treated the same way. It's been fun being with this team. I've made a lot of friends," said Moran. "We all (the team) have a really good relationship. There's a lot of good chemistry. I really didn't know what to expect coming in [to college], but everyone gets along really well, and it's fun being around the other guys." With a selfless attitude and solid team chemistry, the future looks bright for Johnny Moran and the UNI Panthers. |
