Panthers Tie School Record for Threes in 83-61 Win over Wartburg

Cedar Falls, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team tied a school record with 15 three-pointers as the Panthers posted an 83-61 win over Wartburg Wednesday night in the McLeod Center. The 15 treys tied the mark set both in the 2003-04 season (against Drake) and the 1995-96 campaign (against Nebraska). It was also the most three-pointers UNI has made in a home game, as both those previous contests were on the road. Adam Viet (Ackley, Iowa) led the way with five threes, while Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) and Jared Josten (Webster City, Iowa) each had three. Seven different Panthers made triples on the night. The Panthers shot 57.7 percent from three-point land on the night (15-for-26), and 57.1 percent overall from the floor (28-for-49). Wartburg was also hot from downtown, as the Division III Knights made 12-of-28 treys. The two teams combined for 27 threes, which is also the most two teams have made in a game UNI has played in. UNI held a 15-13 lead midway through the first half, when the Panthers made three three-pointers in a one minute span - two of them by Viet - to push the Panthers advantage to 24-13 at the 10:33 mark. Wartburg's Nick Gullickson hit a three to pull the Knights within eight (33-25) with 4:24 left in the half, but UNI ended the opening 20 minutes on a 14-2 run, holding a 46-27 lead at intermission. Wartburg was never able to get UNI's lead to less than 16 points in the second half as the Panthers cruised to the 83-61 win. Viet led the way for UNI with 16 points, while Stout and Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) each added 12. Gullickson led all players with 24 points. UNI improved to 9-2 on the season, while Wartburg fell to 4-4. The Panthers now have a week off before opening Missouri Valley Conference play Dec. 27 at home against Bradley. Tipoff for that game is 8:05 p.m., and it will be televised by ESPN2.
