The University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team (13-1 overall, 4-0 MVC) will look to extend its 12-game win streak when the Panthers take on the Illinois State Redbirds (12-3 overall, 3-1 MVC) on Saturday in Normal, Ill. Tip is slated for 3 p.m. at Redbird Arena.

• UNI has won 12 straight games which ranks as the fifth-best mark in the nation heading into games on Jan. 9. Only Kentucky (15), Purdue (14), Kansas (14) and Texas (14) have longer current win streaks in the nation.
•The Panthers set a school record for consecutive wins in a single season with their 12th straight win in a 61-49 win at Southern Illinois. The previous best was an 11-game streak the Panthers put together in the 2008-09 season.
• The school record for consecutive wins is 14 from the 1962-63 season into the 1963-64 season. The Panthers won their final four games of the 1962-63 season and then opened the 1963-64 season with 10 straight wins.
• The last time UNI started a season 13-1 was in 1963-64, when the Panthers ran off to a 19-1 start en route to a 23-4 mark.
• The 4-0 start in MVC play for the Panthers matches the best start in school history. UNI began league play at 4-0 in 2001-02 and in 2006-07. UNI finished the 2001-02 season with an MVC mark of 8-10. The Panthers finished the 2006-07 season with a 9-9 league mark.
• UNI head coach Ben Jacobson has used the same starting lineup for 27 straight games, dating back to the final 13 games of 2008-09 and the first 14 games this season. Senior forward Adam Koch has started 80 consecutive games. Junior point guard Kwadzo Ahelegbe has started 52 straight games. Junior Ali Farokhmanesh and sophomore Johnny Moran have started all 48 games they have ever played at UNI.
• UNI was picked to win the 2009-2010 Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league’s coaches, sports information directors and media.
• UNI returns five starters and nine of its top 10 scorers from last year’s team that shared the regular season Valley title, won the MVC tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
SCOUTING ILLINOIS STATE
The Illinois State Redbirds are in a tie for second place in the Missouri Valley Conference after beginning league play at 3-1.
The Redbirds are 12-3 overall with the three losses coming to Niagara (76-68), at Ohio (75-57) and at Missouri State (68-64).
Illinois State is led by Valley player of the year candidate Osiris Eldridge, who is averaging 18.3 points per game.
Tim Jankovich is in his third season at the helm of the Redbird program and has tallied a mark of 61-23.

Saturday’s game between UNI and Illinois State will be broadcast live nationally on ESPN2 and ESPN360.com. Jon Sciambi (play-by-play) and LaPhonso Ellis (analyst) will call the action courtside at Redbird Arena.
MVC WEEKLY TELECONFERENCE
Once again this year, the Missouri Valley Conference will hold a weekly men’s basketball teleconference for each of its 10 head coaches.
The calls will be held on Tuesdays and began on Dec. 15, with a break over the Christmas holiday. UNI head coach Ben Jacobson is scheduled to be on at 10:51 a.m.

The Panthers won all three meetings with the Redbirds last season, including a pair of overtime contests. UNI posted a 69-67 double-overtime win at Redbird Arena last year and then advanced to the NCAA Tournament with a 60-57 overtime win the MVC Tournament championship game in St. Louis.
Illinois State leads the all-time series vs. UNI, 34-21.

THE UNDER 50 CLUB
When the UNI Panthers held the Southern Illinois Salukis to 49 points, it marked the fourth time this season that UNI had held an oppoent to under 50 points.
It marked the 12th time in the Ben Jacobson head coaching era that the Panthers had held a team under 50 points. UNI is 11-1 in those contests.
EGLSEDER SEEING DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN MVC PLAY
Senior center Jordan Eglseder is averaging a double-double through four games of MVC play. Eglseder is averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds per game as the Panthers have started MVC play 4-0.
MORAN STEPPING UP
Sophomore Johnny Moran is averaging nearly four points more per game in Missouri Valley Conference action. Through four games, Moran is scoring 9.5 points per game in league play. On the season, Moran is averaging 5.9 points per contest.
KOCH ZEROING IN ON 1,000-POINT CLUB
UNI senior forward Adam Koch is closing on on the 1,000-point scoring club. Koch has tallied 964 points entering Saturday’s action against Illinois State. The Panthers have had 30 players reach 1,000 points in the history of the program.
GARNERING MORE AND MORE SUPPORT IN NATIONAL POLLS
UNI continues to garner more and more votes in the Associated Press and USAToday top 25 polls. This week the Panthers received 35 votes in each poll.
With their 35 votes in the USA Today poll, the Panthers rank No. 31 in the nation. With their 35 votes in the AP poll, the Panthers rank No. 38 in the nation.
UNI is ranked No. 22 in the inaugural ESPN.com Power Rankings (released Jan. 7).
NUMBER ONE IN THE MID-MAJOR TOP 25
UNI has taken over the top spot in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. UNI secured 24 first-place votes and moved up from No. 2 to No. 1. UNI has 752 points in the poll. Gonzaga is second with 716 points and three first-place votes.
