Feb. 26, 2007

St. Louis, Mo. -

Former UNI guard Ben Jacobson (Sioux City, Iowa/East) was honored by being named one of the Missouri Valley Conference's 50 greatest players, as announced by the MVC office Feb. 26. This being the Valley's 100th anniversary, the league is honoring each sport it sponsors with an all-centennial team. Voting was done by fans, both online (www.mvc100.org) and at league arenas, with a total of 7,871 votes cast for men's basketball.

A four-year starter for the Panthers from 2002-06, Jacobson (no relation to UNI's current head coach) ranks third on UNI's all-time scoring list and is 25th on the Valley's scoring chart with 1,787 points. He was a two-time first-team All-MVC pick and the 2004 State Farm MVC Tournament Most Valuable Player. He is currently playing professionally in Germany.

The MVC's "Starting Five" consisted of the top-five vote getters, which were Larry Bird (Indiana State, 1976-79), Hersey Hawkins (Bradley, 1984-88), Ed Macauley (Saint Louis, 1946-49), Xavier McDaniel (Wichita State, 1981-85) and Oscar Robertson (Cincinnati, 1957-60). The top coach was Oklahoma A&M's Henry Iba (1934-57).
