Grand Forks, N.D. - UNI head men's basketball coach Ben Jacobson was back in Grand Forks, N.D., this past weekend to participate in induction ceremonies for the University of North Dakota Athletics Hall of Fame.

Jacobson's 1989-90 men's basketball team, of which he was a freshman guard, finished that season with a 28-7 overall record and were champions of the North Central Conference with a 14-4 league mark. The Fighting Sioux also went undefeated at home (16-0.

After finishing third in the NCC conference tournament in the 1989-90 season, UND was named to host the NCAA North Central Region tournament. North Dakota beat Alaska Anchorage 78-71 in the regional semifinals and then downed Metro State 85-80 in the region final. That put the Sioux in the Division II Elite Eight tournament in Springfield, Mass. UND opened play there with an 89-67 win over Jacksonville (Ala.) State, but lost 101-92 to eventual national champion Kentucky Wesleyan in the semifinals. In the third-place game, the Sioux dispatched Morehouse (Ga.) College 98-77 to finish third in the nation.

Several others with UNI ties were also part of that team. Rich Glas, formerly a UNI assistant coach and now the head basketball coach at Concordia, was is in second season as UND's head coach. In addition, former UNI head coach and current Iowa State head coach Greg McDermott was an assistant coach for that team.
